Default Custody Question

I was watching one of those TV court shows and a divorcing couple was on fighting for custody of their dog. Is this something that can be brought to court?

Pet custody laws are a growing concern for divorcing spouses. Laws on such issues vary from state to state but this is still a relatively new area of the law which is somewhat surprising seeing as how high the divorce rates are.
