Many people live in poverty in the state of South Carolina. Approximately 15.7% of the state's 4.5 million residents live at or below the U.S. federal poverty level. It's all too easy for low-income or indigent South Carolinians to have their legal rights pushed to the side. Luckily, the state is bursting at its seams with first-rate pro bono services and community legal resources. Throughout the state of South Carolina, it's easy to find free legal aid; the following organizations can help.
South Carolina Pro Bono Services
There is no centralized organization that handles all of the pro bono services in the state of South Carolina. That's not to say, though, that such services do not exist. On the contrary - three first-rate organizations handle the majority of the state's pro bono services. South Carolina Legal Services, or SCLS, is a non-profit corporation that helps low-income residents with civil matters. The South Carolina Access to Justice Commission has been assisting low-income South Carolinians since 2007. The South Carolina Centers for Equal Justice is another organization that can be of service in such matters.
