  • North Carolina Pro Bono & Community Legal Resources

There are approximately 9.4 million people living in the state of North Carolina. Out of that number, around 15.2% of them live at or below the poverty line as established by the U.S. federal government. For those residents of the Tar Heel State, handling legal issues is easier said than done. Retaining or hiring an attorney can be prohibitively expensive, especially for those with limited financial resources. Happily, North Carolina is bursting at its seams with great pro bono and community legal resources; the following information will point you in the right direction.

Pro Bono Services in North Carolina

Two organizations handle the vast majority of the pro bono work in the state of North Carolina. It should be noted that the North Carolina Bar Association's Rules of Professional Conduct require members to provide decent amounts of pro bono work every year. The Public Service and Pro Bono Activities Department of the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation coordinates many of these efforts across the state; Legal Aid of North Carolina, or LANC, also provides statewide assistance to low-income North Carolinians.
