  • Nebraska Pro Bono & Community Legal Resources

Low-income individuals are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to being represented in a court of law. All too often, they have no hope of being able to afford competent legal counsel. In the state of Nebraska, approximately 11% of the state's nearly 1.8 million residents are living at or below the federal poverty level for the United States. Fortunately, there are many pro bono and community legal services available to such individuals in Nebraska. If you or someone you know is in need of legal assistance - but cannot afford an attorney - you are at the right place. Below, you will find specific information regarding community legal resources and pro bono services in the state of Nebraska.

    Pro Bono Resources in Nebraska

The Nebraska Supreme Court recommends that all attorneys in the state volunteer a significant percentage of their time to assisting indigent or low-income individuals through pro bono services. In Nebraska, such efforts are primarily coordinated via the Volunteer Lawyers Project, or VLP. Since 1982, the VLP - which is a service of the Nebraska State Bar - has been assisting low-income Nebraskans with a variety of legal issues.

    Nebraska Community Legal Resources

Nebraska is a large state. Most of its pro bono and free legal aid services are located in the eastern part of the state, near Omaha and Lincoln. Low-income people who reside elsewhere in the state are encouraged to contact these organizations by phone. Many times, transportation arrangements can be made to accommodate such individuals. Occasionally, legal advice can be given over the phone so that those in need do not have to travel. At any rate, making the call is an important first step.
