  • Kentucky Pro Bono & Community Legal Resources

Poverty is a serious problem in the state of Kentucky. Of the approximately 4.3 million people who call the Bluegrass State home, more than 17% live at or below the federal poverty level for the United States. Indeed, Kentucky ranks seventh in terms of the percentage of its population that lives in poverty. It's little wonder, then, that pro bono and other community legal resources are so necessary in the state. Luckily for those who need them, though, there are plenty available.

    Pro Bono Services in Kentucky

Although they are not required to do so, attorneys in the state of Kentucky are encouraged by the state's Supreme Court to provide at least 50 hours of pro bono legal service per year. In 1996, the non-profit Access to Justice Foundation, or AJF, was created to help address the legal needs of the state's large low-income population. Since then, the AJF has been the primary provider of pro bono services in the state, assisting thousands of people each year. The Legal Aid Society is also available to assist the state's most indigent citizens.
