Kansas Pro Bono & Community Legal Resources

Due to its agriculturally-based economy, the state of Kansas is sparsely populated - especially when compared with many other states in the U.S. With a population that hovers right around 2.8 million people, Kansas ranks 33rd in the country. Approximately 10.5% of those 2.8 million people live at or below the federal poverty level. As such, there is a pressing need for pro bono and community legal resources in the state of Kansas. Fortunately, there are plenty available.

Pro Bono Services in Kansas

In 1977, three separate legal aid societies - for Topeka, Wichita and Kansas City - merged to create Kansas Legal Services. Since then, the program has worked to provide pro bono services to low-income and indigent Kansans. This statewide non-profit organization touches the lives of thousands of Kansans each year, and should be the first stop for anyone who is unable to pay for legal assistance.

Kansas Community Legal Resources

There is plenty of additional help for low-income Kansans, beyond Kansas Legal Services. Throughout the state, there is a large number of community legal resources readily available. Each organization has its own set of criteria concerning eligibility; also, different organizations handle different types of cases.
